What was covered

January 11, 2024, marks the 22nd anniversary of the opening of the military prison at Guantánamo Bay, which was established in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. When Biden took office, the prison held 40 people. Today, thirty detainees remain. What will happen to the prison and its detainees as the Biden administration’s first term comes to an end? Will the prison ever close? How has the withdrawal from Afghanistan reshaped the legal and policy discussion over the prison?

Join New America's Future Security Program as they welcome Dr. Fionnuala Ni Aolain, Mohamedou Ould Slahi, and Andy Worthington for a discussion about what is next for the prison. Aolain is the University Regents Professor at University of Minnesota aw and former UN Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms while Countering Terrorism. In 2023, as Special Rapporteur, she made a technical visit to the detention facility at the U.S. Naval Station Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. Mohamedou Ould Slahi was detained at Guantánamo Bay from 2002 until his release in 2016. He is the author of Guantánamo Diary, a memoir of his experience. Andy Worthington is the co-founder of Close Guantanamo and author of The Guantanamo Files.
